Google is Dynamically Changing Categories on Map Pack – Local SEO

Optimizing your Google My business account is the key to success in local SEO, Google changes a lot of aspects of its algorithm to serve its customers with the best results. recently while searching I found the following. It seems that Google is dynamically changing the map pack categories based on the search intent and the keyword, My example below shows my local search for a “steak restaurant” and a “bar restaurant

I then searched for bar restaurant as the “gluten-free” dietary options seem like a given, and they indeed also added bar as an option. In which as you also noticed Cecils BBQ is also a top option for the same results.

You can see how both of these categories show the relevant category based on my search, Becuase of this there may be a need to optimize your categories. What categories are you not showing up for that your service? Keep in mind that you want to stay relevant. Relevancy to your business matters, If you’re a barber your not also a marketing agency. Stick to the topical, For example, an electronics repair shop may also be “computer repair”, “Audio Visual repair” etc.

Stay Relevant

Staying topical and consistent is the key to a clean local SEO strategy. Keep in mind that you also don’t want to spam and any changes you make to your categories you will have to also change on other directories that may also contain the same categories. Optimize accordingly and test your results. If you’re in the restaurant industry there may be categories that meet dietary needs. For example, Gluten Free as I googled above can be a strong opportunity to show up if you indeed offer gluten-free options.
