I Love Google map maker and it was part of my arsenal when I could not get good support from the Google maps team, but it seems to be “graduating” soon and retiring.
But, we have some updates to share. Today, we want to let you know that Google Map Maker features will officially graduate and be integrated directly into Google Maps in March 2017 when we’ll retire the standalone Map Maker product.
How are they going to collect data from dedicated users?
Local Guides program is a program that rewards you for taking pictures and updating business information on the fly, available on Android and Apple
I am currently using this and I have seen how much it has grown, potentially I can see the impact it will have due to the new UX/UI in which is gamified to give you the “wanting” aspect of actually fixing a lot of these poor business listings. The more points I gain the more exclusive “member” I become to join in on product reviews and other community related events not available to the general map maker user.
As a person that has contributed to map maker for years I can see why they need to make this shift. With the ever changing environment and strategy of Google openly making their search engine easier for the end user, this will cut down on fake business listing, spam and competitors changing information that could potentially hurt other’s businesses.
